As written for the school magazine by Standard 2 students of NZ Services School, Woodlands 1975

These then 7 year olds demonstrate in their observations of Singapore, the diversity of feelings and thoughts of any of us who were there.
I'm sure you can identify with some or all of the following..and it will bring a smile to your face as you remember.



Eating chilli crab and prawns.

Seeing a dead chit chat.

Getting the local holidays.


Not being able to have the fans on at night.

Eating Chinese food with chopsticks.

The ants getting into the food.

Having tropical fish to look after.

Having to go and get injections against smallpox and cholera.

Eating Nasi Goreng from a makan stall


When you get bitten by  mosquitos.

Eating a ten cent Malaysian pineapple by yourself.


Getting all hot and sweaty.


Going for a junk ride on the
harbour.


When you go shopping and have to carry the parcels.


Going for a ride on a local bus.


The long trip home on the bus.

In three and a half months when we go home to New Zealand.


Not being able to find my things after the Amah put them away.


Going to the Jalan Kayu night market on Fridays.


Listening to the loud thunder during a storm.

Hearing the ice-cream man’s bell.


Smelling the dirty monsoon drain.

The sound of chit chats.


Being bitten by big red ants


Being able to go swimming all year round.


When you leave your Amah.


When the monsoon drain blocks in a thunder storm.

Being stuck in a traffic jam.


Having a pet turtle called Murtle.

Seeing a Chinese Funeral.


Going to the air conditioned film room at school.

Having to go to school early.


The fresh grass smell when it starts raining.

When you fall through the mosquito net.

When Mum slaps a mosquito so hard that you see it’s blood on her hand,

When your Amah makes your favourite biscuits.


Seeing a car accident.
